Choosing a Light for your Dynamo Setup

  • by

Dynamo wheels have been a staple of bikepacking and touring for decades. Dynamo hubs work by acting as a generator to create an electric current to power a light, GPS, or charging device. With modern dynamo hubs creating very little rolling resistance in the front wheel, they become an essential tool for those who want to venture into remote parts of the world, where access to power may be limited. You can also roll deep into the night and not have to worry about your light running out of battery. Additionally, you can charge power banks or SRAM AXS batteries to keep everything in your rig rolling.

With a plethora of lights to choose from, it can be difficult to source which light options are best for your application. There’s a couple things to consider such as the amount of light generated (lumens), connection type, beam pattern and more. In this article I’ll be discussing our two favorite headlamps – the kLite Ultra lamp, and the Sinewave Beacon II.

kLite Ultra Lamp – Front Dynamo Light

kLite Ultra Lamp w/ Micro USB Charger

MSRP: $409.95 (Kit includes Lamp, wiring loom, dual USB charger, handlebar mount, zip ties, cool hat)

kLite is an Australian company who focuses on tech for bikepackers and remote riders. Their lights are bright at 1300 Lumens with three bulbs, casting a wide coverage so you can see both in front of you and in the distance and peripherals. kLite comes with options for either SON Dynamo or Shimano SP connections. Some pros of the kLite:

  • Ease of use due to the plug-and-play XT30 connectors. The hub connection also comes configured and waterproof, requiring no soldering to setup.
  • Capacitive storage which provides light in low power mode for up to 15 minutes without incoming power – ideal for hike-a-bike, on-the-trail maintenance, and a quick camp setup.
  • Bright and consistent lighting, even at low speeds.
  • Options for “always on” or “lamp or USB” switches.
  • Options for dual or single USB ports.
  • USB connection can power rear light.
  • Two year warranty

They offer two beam patterns:

Adventure Beam Pattern <——–> Ultra Race Beam Pattern

kLite Adventure Race Lamp (MTB)

The Adventure lamp is designed with mountain biking in mind. Its recommended use is for slower movement, when you need to see a wider view of what is in front of you. The Adventure contains two flood optics on the outside and a spot optic in the center.

kLite Ultra Race Lamp (Gravel)

This light is designed with a beam pattern that enables you to see further out in front. This is helpful when moving at faster speeds on gravel or pavement. The lamp contains two spot optics on the outside and a flood optic in the center.

Sinewave Beacon II – Front Dynamo Light

The upgraded version of the Sinewave Beacon is a reliable and simple solution for a dynamo headlight. Unlike the kLite, the Beacon comes as an all-in-one solution with the USB, switch, and light all integrated into one unit. The Beacon reaches 100 lumens at 5 MPH, 375 lumens at 8 MPH, 600 lumens at 10 MPH, and 750 lumens at 13 MPH.

The Beacon comes connected at the light, but with no connector at the hub so some soldering is required. We recommend picking up a SON Coaxial Adaptor to connect to the hub terminals as it offers the easiest and safest way to disconnect when removing the front wheel.

  • Simple single unit design. Switch between “Lamp Only (High Brightness)”, “Lamp and USB”, or “USB only”.
  • Taillight compatibility
  • 5 minutes of standlight when stopped.
  • External USB battery pack can be used to power the light. Perfect for commuting and stopped at stoplights.
  • Lots of color options!
  • 3 Year Warranty
